Phelps Residence is designed by Assembledge+, a remodel project of a regional mid-century house located steps from the waterways of Huntington Harbor, California, USA. With 3,537 SF in size, this residence is transformed into a modern house a two-story stucco façade structure. This renovation can honor the mid-century bones of the existing structure of the house.
This regional mid-century house is developed in the 1960s together with the rest of the Harbor neighborhood. The renovation’s goal is to the mid-century bones of the existing structure that has open beam ceilings and full-height windows. New life and detail are also added through the ground-up renovation.
The house volume is a two-story stucco façade structure with unique vertical cedar and black metal accents. The indoor-outdoor experience can be created thanks to wall-to-wall, full-height sliding doors, extending the front yard fire pit of the house and the seating area through the living room to the cabana and backyard swimming pool.
The Harbor climate offers an ideal environment to open the space up to the yards every year so the footprint of the house can be expanded and also allowing for an uninterrupted flow between indoor and outdoor areas and the house rooms. In the front yard, the stack bond CMU garden walls define the entry sequence, honoring the residence’s mid-century history.
There is a steel and terrazzo sculptural stair in the entry foyer, in a recessed bed of river rock. The lower level’s large-scale terrazzo tiles join the house living room, kitchen, and dining room. A more intimate family room and private bedrooms can be found on the upper level while the large-scale windows capture the stunning views from each room.
