The Rammed Earth Modern Residence is situated in Paradise Valley, Arizona, and developed by Kendle Design Collaborative. The 4,700-square-foot home incorporated humble materials like wood, stone, glass, and earth into the design. With modest yet sophisticated palette based on the honesty and integrity of natural materials, the house is filled with warm contemplative spaces thanks to the deft arrangement and direct connection to the surrounding desert landscape.
The rammed earth walls rise from the geography, metaphorically extending the desert site upward. The walls also embrace and create the interior space while acting as the foundation and structure at the same time. The existence of earthen walls and floor-to-ceiling glass allows the natural light to invade the interior. Moreover, the vertical and horizontal building planes create apertures, framing the distant views and reinforcing the house’s connection with the surrounding desert area.
Natural materials, such as wood for the cabinets, stone for the countertops, and limestone for the floors, help define the living spaces altogether. During the day, sunlight baths the house, presenting new hues that change the rooms’ character. Also, the sunlight that reflects on the wall windows and overhead skylights animates the overall interior spaces.
