Designed as a full appreciation for the wonderful surrounding nature where it sits, Valley Crescent House is a 2017 residential project by Condon Scott Architects. This house is located on an elevated site with panoramic views toward Treble Cone, Black Peak, and Lake Wanaka.
It is a house that consists of three gabled pavilions. These pavilions look towards the western view and spread across the site while the living spaces can be found in the center. The ceilings are lofty, accentuating the mountainous views and providing a sense of spaciousness.
Bathrooms and a study nook are included in the lower-profile linkages, offering a sense of coziness. Bedrooms can be found in the outer wings. These bedrooms have their own angles on the wide view. There are also sheltered outdoor courtyards that can be accessed from the living and kitchen pavilion.
One of the living room corners can be opened to allow the occupants to move indoors and out easily. A sheltered courtyard that is tucked in between the living room and the master bedroom comes with an outdoor fireplace.
For the material, this project uses a material palette to merge the home with its surrounding landscape. The schist that is used for accent walls has a big part in the interiors and the external cladding. Warm, rich cedar is the material for the external cladding and ceilings, contrasting with the schist and areas of Euro Tray steel. This home also has a special character thanks to the rusticated corten steel.
