Formation was a designed developed by Mark Reigelman for San Diego International Airport’s parking area. The project took place in San Diego, California. For this Formation project, the design team chose vibrant colors and energetic patterns.
When travelers exit the terminal, they will be greeted by huge graphic tapestries on the adjacent garage. If looked closely, they will notice that each of the three screens is composed of hundreds of individually-cast resin airplanes. These resin airplanes are strung onto stainless steel aircraft cables. Vibrant colors like red, blue, and yellow were used in the craftwork.
Formation is site-specific designed uniquely to weave together the histories of aeronautical innovation in San Diego. This is reflected through the specific aircraft of the fiber arts and crafts traditions of indigenous people of the American Southwest.
In short, the aircraft was created to remind the people of NF106B, Spirit of St. Louis, Convair 880. Meanwhile, the project was finalized with the help of Demiurge, Stratasys, and Debbie Seracini at the San Diego Air and Space Museum.
