There comes a time in everyone’s life when they have to cut ties with their old, trusty couch. That thing has gotten you through a whole lot, we’re sure, but the stains from college aren’t as charming to the people who didn’t see how they ended up there.

It could be a couch, table, chair, anything. The point is, many of us get bogged down with old furniture, and we need to find a way to get rid of it all.

But big, clunky pieces of furniture are hard to get rid of, so what can you do? Let’s find out.

1. Donations

The best move is to allow someone else to get use out of the piece if you can. Some furniture is just beyond salvaging though.

If the item is too covered in cat or dog hair to sit on, or it’s covered in cuts and holes, a donation center might not take it. If it’s in relatively good condition, you should be able to give it to a Goodwill or thrift store of some kind.

It’s always worth giving it a shot!

2. Furniture Removal Services

The step is to find more info about furniture removal services in your area. These are people who can come pick up your items and take them away for you.

You may have to pay a small fee, but there are few ways to dispose of large items entirely for free.

3. Take It to the Trash Company

The trash company might actually have a “large furniture pickup day.” A lot of garbage companies pick one day a month or season to take on the large items of a community.

If this doesn’t apply to you, you can ask the company if they accept drop-offs of large items. Many times, the problem lies in picking the items up, not handling them.

Just give your garbage company a call and see what their position is.

4. Sell It Online

You’d be surprised at what people will pay for old furniture. They might even want to come to pick the item up if it’s free and raggedy.

As you’re sorting out how to get rid of the furniture, throw it up on Craigslist or another site to see if someone wants to pay money for it or simply pick it up. What’s the harm in dropping a line?

5. Leave It on the Curb for a While

Another thing to try as you’re figuring out the logistics of disposal is to just put it out on the curb. People are bound to stop, check the item(s) out, and potentially take them.

Your objective is to get rid of that old furniture however you can, so nothing is off the table unless it’s illegal!
