Like a Pro: Everything You Need to Carry Out the Perfect DIY Job Safely

With people spending more time at home, and with various bills increasing across the globe, a lot more DIY projects are taking place right now than ever before. It’s important that you put your safety above all else, which is why this article is going to explain everything you need to carry out the perfect DIY job safely.

Correct use of power tools

Whilst some of the rules of power tool usage seems like common sense, not adhering to them could result in catastrophic consequences. So, make sure you test all power tools before use. Check the cords and cases and NEVER use a power tool if you’re not certain it’s safe.

In line with that, make sure you actually use the tools as they should be used. Don’t drag them about by their cables, and never leave them unattended, especially if there are children present.

Even better, invest in a cordless drill so that you never have to worry about any cables getting tangled, tripping you up, or getting in your way.

Dress appropriately

One of the benefits of DIY is that nobody sees you – so don’t bother trying to look nice, focus on safety. Avoid any clothing that is loose or flowy and avoid wearing jewelry. Make sure all long hair is tied well out of the way and that long sleeves are removed or pinned back very well.

Clean workspace

As you should do with all jobs, take a minute to ensure your workspace is clean and safe before you start. Make sure the space is free from obstructions, and that any power tools or dangerous objects and materials are out of your way and out of reach of children.

Something else that’s commonly overlooked is the importance of a well-lit workspace. If you can’t see everything you’re doing clearly, accidents and mistakes are bound to occur.

Follow instructions

It’s easy to think that you know best, but unless you truly are a DIY expert, you should follow instructions to keep yourself safe. Consult all power tool manuals before using them so you’re aware of how to use them safely.

For instructional videos, we’d recommend watching them through at least once before beginning the project, so you know what steps you need to undertake beforehand.

Have a pre-prepared first aid kit available

No matter how careful you are, sometimes accidents just happen. Whether it’s a scratch or something nastier, you need to have access to a  well-equipped first aid kit  just in case. The usual bandages, plasters, and disinfectants are staples for a first aid kit. Ensure it’s within reach or at the very least in the same room as you at all times.

Having said that, know when you need to get help. This applies both medically and in terms of the project. There’s no shame in admitting you’ve taken on too much or that you’ve caused yourself some injury. What matters most is that you’re confident and safe when undertaking the DIY job.

And there you have it – just a few essential tips to keep in mind in order to make sure your DIY job goes as smoothly and safely as possible.
